This devotional manuscripts with German prayers to the Virgin Mary and Christ was produced for Louis I, Count of Löwenstein (b. 1463, d. 1523), founder of the house Löwenstein-Wertheim, as is indicated by 6 depictions of his coat of arms, 1 depiction of the coat of arms of his wife, Elisabeth von Montfort (d. 1503), and a miniature that may depict his relative Georg von Löwenstein (d. 1464), canon of Bamberg.

ff. 1r-2r: An exposition on the Pater noster: ‘[rubric:] Hie stet das dewthsch pater noster mit der Glosz [prayer:] PATER NOSTER vater unser Ich bit dich besunder durch alle deine wunden die du würckest in himel un in erden lasse uns dein kint werden [etc.]’.
ff. 2v-3v: An exposition on the Ave Maria (the ‘Golden Ave Maria’): ‘[rubric:] Das guldin Ave maria AVE [prayer:] Got grusse dich kunigin reich [etc.]’.
f. 3v: The Pater noster, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Pater noster [prayer:] Vater unszer der du bist inden himelen [etc.]’.
ff. 3v: The Ave Maria, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Ave maria [prayer:] Gegrüsses seystu Maria vol gnaden [etc.]’.
ff. 4r-4v: The Apostolic Creed, German translation divided in twelve parts attributed to the Apostles, begins: ‘Ich glaub in got vater almechtighen schöpfer himels under erden [etc.]’.
f. 5r: The Magnificat, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Magnificat anima mea [prayer:] Mein sel grösset den herren Und mein geist frewet sich in got meinen heill [etc.]’.
ff. 5r-5v: The Salve Regina, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Salve Regina [prayer: Gegrusses seistu künigin der barmhertzikeit [etc]’.
f. 5v: Nunc dimittis, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Nunc dimittis servum tuum domine [prayer:] Du las herre deinen knicht nach deinen worte im fride [etc.]’.
f. 5v: Veni Sancte Spiritus, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Veni Sancte spiritus [prayer:] Cum heiliger geist und erfulle die hertzen der glaubigen [etc.]’.
f. 5v: Requiem eternam, German translation, ‘[rubric:] Requiem eternam [prayer:] Die Ewigen rwe gib in herre und das ewig licht erleuchte sie Amen’.
f. 5v: Anima Christi, German translation, begins ‘Die sele gotes heil mich der leichnam gots behalt mich in dem ewigen leben [etc.]’.
ff. 6r-7v: A prayer on the Virgin Mary’s and Christ’s suffering in the Passion, ‘[rubric:] Ein gut gebet von unszer frawen und von der Marter vnszers herren [prayer:] Sancta Maria Junfraw ob allen Jungfrawen Ein Muter der barmhertzikeit Ein muter aller wirdikeit Ein susser trost aller betrubten [etc.]’.

Foliation: ff. 7 ( + 5 unfoliated paper leaves at the begining + 7 at the end); ff. [8], [9] and [10] are fifteenth-century paper leaves with watermarks (see C. M. Briquet, Les Filigranes: Dictionnaire Historique des Marques du Papier dès leur Apparition vers 1282 jusqu'en 1600, 4 vols (London: Quaritch, 1907), nos 15604 and 15622) that suggest an origin in Southern Germany or Northern Italy; gilt edges.
Script: Gothic cursive.
Binding: Post-1600: cardboard covered with black marbled paper and gold-lined leather, the spine inscribed at the British Museum: ‘PATER NOSTER. GERM.’.

Louis I, Count of Löwenstein (b. 1463, d. 1523), founder of the house Löwenstein-Wertheim: his arms (ff. 1r, 3v (2x), 5v (2x), 7v); the arms of his wife, Elisabeth von Montfort (d. 1503), on f. 7v: and his relative, Georg von Löwenstein (d. 1464), canon of Bamberg, possibly depicted on f. 7v.
Adolphus Asher (b. 1800, d. 1853), Berlin bookseller and dealer: sold to the British Museum in 1846: note on f. [v] recto: ‘Purchased of A. Asher. 24 Jan. 1846’.
