[Franco-Ottoman Diplomatic Correspondence]
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains copies of letters written by the French Consuls in Saida to the Ottoman governor of the province, relating mostly to the affairs and interests of French subjects residing or travelling in Saida and in the neighbouring localities such as Akka, Tripoli, Sur and Ladhaqiyah. They are signed by the following Consuls : Damirat, Bourguignon, de Clérambeau, and Gautier. The few dates that occur range from 1172-1173 AH (1758-1760 CE).
The official addressed is not named in the letters, but it was probably Saadedin Paşa, who, in an Imperial nişan addressed to him in Rebiülahir 1172 AH (December 1758 CE), is entitled Vali of Saida.
The collection was apparently formed by a Dragoman of the French Consulate, who wrote at the beginning "telif el-tercüman Perille."
