- Physical Characteristics:
- Materials: cloth, stiffened and lacquered, with inlaid mother-of-pearl decoration.Script: Burmese, made with inlaid mother-of-pearl. Wrapper: Silk brocade (size 28 x 108 cm) from Japan with a unique Japanese pattern of Chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, and butterflies. These are woven into abrocade pattern with gold Japanese washi-paper threads on a solid yellow silk. This textiledates back to the early nineteenth century. The back islined with a piece of fine white woven cotton. Washi-paper production dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867). Thin washi-paper has been the source for gold and silver threads used inNishijin-ori, a traditional textile produced in Kyoto's Nishijin district. Fromthe early nineteenth century on, gold leaf (kinpaku) was pressed on washi-paperand then cut and twisted to be used as a fine gold thread. Paper yarn is used as the weft, while other yarns are usedin the warp. The finished paper fabric is not only flexible, but also strongenough to withstand several washes. Paper yarn is frequently combined with silk, cotton, or hemp. Washi fabric is used to make kimono, a traditional Japaneserobe with wide sleeves.
