(2) Little Office of St Catharine of Alexandria, compiled in a similar way to the more usual little Hours of the Holy Spirit or Cross. The antiphons are rhymed and similar, with some variations, to those printed by F. J. Mone in Lateinische Hymnen des Mittelalters, iii, Freiburg, 1855, pp. 370, 371, beg. 'Deprecare regem celi'. (Cf. also U. Chevalier, Repertorium Hymnologicum, i, no. 4380, and Leroquais, op. cit., i, p. xxvi). ff. 13-21.

Vellum; ff. v+74. 99 mm. x 75 mm. Lat. and Ital. Second half of xv cent. Written in N. Italy, partly by a scribe called Prosdocimus (see ff. 11, 11b), for a woman called 'Veronica', whose name is given in many of the prayers(see ff. 1, 3, 4b, 7, 11b, 22, 39, 41b, 43, 68b).Several hands are discernible, of which the chief are:- (1) the humanist hand of the scribe Prosdocimus, ff. 1-12;- (2) the normal Italian 15th cent. round book-hand of the Offices themselves, ff. 13-21, 23b, 25-36;- (3) a similar one on ff. 21b-22b, 38-69; and (4) the slightly later one of the final Ital. prayer on ff. 73-74b. The subjects of the full-page illuminations are:- (1) 'Veronica' before St Catharine, f. 21;- (2) the Virgin with the Holy Child, f. 24b;- (3) Christ emerging from the tomb, f. 37b. Gatherings irregular. On f. ii are the initials 'A.B/C.P' and on f. iii b is the note 'Anno 1527'. Belonged to Alfred Gauntlett Hammond (d. 1944), of Southwick, co. Suss., and his wife, Marie Hammond, in whose collection it was MS. 12 (see bookstamp, f. ii b) (Add. MSS. 43715, 43716 were presented in 1934 by A. G. Hammond in memory of his wife). Presented, together with Add. Ch. 71818, by Miss G. M. Hammond in memory of her father.
