ACCOMPT ROLL OF ROBERT DE TAWTON, late Keeper of the Wardrobe, for foreign expenses; 29 Sept. 1333-30 July 1334. Arranged on the usual daily basis, with subdivisions according to the nature of the payments made, viz. 'Elemosina', 'Necessaria', 'Dona', 'Robe et Calciature', 'Feoda militum', 'Restauracio equorum', 'Nuncii'. A contemporary endorsement on m. 1 records the rendering of the accompt to the Exchequer by William de Northwell, Tawton's cofferer, on 30 Jan. 1336, for which see further T. F. Tout, Chapters in ... Administrative History, iv, 1928, pp. 78, 80, 95. Vellum roll; 14 membranes joined at the head. Various lengths, 430 mm. wide. Circ. A.D. 1336. For the use of rolls instead of books for Wardrobe Accompts at this date see J. H. Johnson, 'The King's Wardrobe and Household' in The English Government at Work 1327-1336 (ed. J. F. Willard and W. A. Morris), i, 1940, p. 233. No. 1442 in an unidentified 19th-cent. sale-cat. or inventory (label, m. 9b). Subsequently belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart.
