RAMSAY PAPERS

Correspondence and papers of Sir George Dalhousie Ramsay, C.B., of the War Office (b. 1828, d. 1920). He was Private Secretary 1849-1855, to both his uncle, Fox Maule (afterwards, 1861, Maule-Ramsay), 2nd Baron Panmure, 11th Earl of Dalhousie 1860, as Secretary at War and as Secretary of State for War, and also to the Hon. Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea 1861, as Secretary at War; he eventually became Assistant Director of Army Stores and Clothing and later, 1863-1893, Director. He edited, together with Sir George Brisbane Douglas, 5th Bart., The Panmure Papers, 2 vols., 1908, but his own correspondence with Lord Panmure was not published therein. The names of the writers of letters are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Five volumes. Folio (unless otherwise stated). Presented by Miss A . E. Mills and Miss V. E. Mills, granddaughters of Sir G. D. Ramsay.
