'DELLA FORTIFICAZIONE': an anonymous treatise on fortification; 17th-18th cent. Italian. The first of three books on fortification mentioned in the preface (f. 4b): 'Trattato in tre libri; nel primo de quali dimosterassi l'eccellenza dell' Architettura Militare e varij modi di fortificare qualsiuoglia sito in qualsiuoglia luogo e parte situato, e rendirlo sicuro da qualsiuoglia Nemico; Nel 20 della Difesa da qualunque potenza che mediante la prime s'ottiene; e nel 30 dell'Offesa, et espugnatione d'una Piaggia, o per reculperarla essendosi perduta.' In five chapters, sub- divided into rules, with a preface and numerous diagrams. Reference is made to the works of earlier writers on fortification including Chevalier Antoine de Ville (d. 1656), Comte Blaise François de Pagan (d. 1665), François Blondel (d. 1686), Alain Manesson Mallet (d. 1706), Sebastien Le Prestre, seigneur de Vauban, Maréchal de France 1703 (d. 1707), and many others (see the summaries of chapters 2 and 3 at ff. 2, 2b). Paper; ff. i + 119. Quarto. XVII-XVIII cent. Calf binding with gold tooling on the spine. Watermarks similar to E. Heawood, Watermarks, 1950, nos. 929, 930. On f. i is the name 'Sr Ed .
