CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS OF HERMANN VON PETKUM, Envoy of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp at The Hague, relating to Petkum's part in the secret peace negotiations between France and the Allies; 1706-1716. French, Dutch (46489B, f. 144) and cipher (with deciphering overwritten). The correspondence consists mainly of letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Torcy, French Secretary of State, with copies or autograph drafts of Petkum's replies. Torcy's letters are mostly written on his behalf and bear the code-name 'Salomon'; the letters at 46489 A, ff. 168, 186 are autograph. Some correspondence of Petkum with Pierre Rouillé, French Envoy to Holland in 1709, and with the 1st Duke of Marlborough, is included. A series of newsletters from Paris, 1711, is at 46489 B, ff. 94-136b passim. The papers are calendared in Hist. MSS. Comm., 14th Report, App. ix, 1895, pp. 317-366. Petkum's part in the negotiations is recorded in Mémoires de M. de **** [Torcy] pour servir á l'histoire des négociations, The Hague, especially i, 1757, pp. 183-184, 283, ii, 1756, pp. 274-275.
