The present collection, like the other series of papers, was used for The Journal and Correspondence of William, Lord Auckland, 4 vols., 1861-1862, edited by G. Hogge, with a preface by Robert, 3rd Baron Auckland. Much of the correspondence consists of papers of Lord Auckland, as Under-Secretary of State and Commissioner to North America, relating to the American Revolution, 1775-1779, including intercepted correspondence of American diplomatists. These and other letters in the Auckland Papers, which were then at King's College, Cambridge, were reproduced in B. F. Stevens, Facsimiles of Manuscripts in European Archives relating to America, 1773 - 1783, 25 vols., 1889-1898. Among correspondence with William Pitt the younger are some letters relating to his courtship of Lord Auckland's daughter, Eleanor, in 1797 (Vol. II, ff. 163-174), which are printed by Lord Rosebery in his Letters relating to the Love Episode,of William Pitt, 1900, pp. 1-11, 16-23. An extract from a letter (Vol. II, ff. 81-82) from Alexander Wedderburn (1st Earl of Rosslyn 1801) is printed in Lord Campbell's Lives of the Lord Chancellors, 4th ed., 1857, viii, pp. 35-36. The names of all the writers are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Paper; ff. 90, 227. Folio. 1764-1834. Owned, circ. 1900 (see Lord Rosebery, op. cit., p.v), by Robert Edmund Dickinson, M.P., grandson of Robert, 3rd Baron Auckland. Presented by his sister, Miss Violet Mary Dickinson.
