BENTLEY PAPERS. Records of the publishing house known successively as Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley ( 1829- Aug. 1832 ), Richard Bentley ( Sept. 1832-Feb. 1871), and Richard Bentley and Son ( Feb. 1871- Aug. 1898 ). From 1871 to 1895 the firm was controlled by George Bentley, son of Richard Bentley I, and from 1895 to 1898 by George Bentley's son, Richard Bentley II, in whose hands the papers remained after the stock and assets were bought by Macmillan and Co. in 1898. Included also are:- (1) Agreements with authors, of Henry Colburn, publisher; 1827-1829. Add. MS. 46611, ff. 1-20 passim, 46;- (2) Two ledgers previously in the possession of Samuel Bentley, printer, brother of Richard Bentley I; 1837 - 1856. Add. MSS. 46566, 46567:- (3) Correspondence and accompts of James Hogg, junior, mainly relating to the magazine London Society, later owned by R. Bentley and Son; 1866-1870. Add. MSS. 46665, 46666. Most of the present collection has been published in microfilm by Chadwyck-Healey, Ltd., as The Archives of Richard Bentley & Son, 1829 - 1898, part I (an annotated index to the microfilms, giving Add MS numbers and Mic.B references) is held on open access in the Manuscripts reading room at MSS 070.50942). With an Appendix', 1884, in eight volumes, stamped 'File Copy', and marked on the title-page 'Private', was transferred to the Department of Prints and Drawings, 9 May 1949. Presented with Add.
