PAPERS OF GEORGE GROTE, the historian of Greece, and Harriet, formerly Lewin, his wife, viz.:- (1) Two letters from George Grote to Joseph Parkes of Birmingham on political matters ( the second lacks a beginning ). An extract from ff. 1 - 2 is printed in Harriet Grote, A brief Retrospect of the political Events of 1831-1832 by a contemporary Witness, 1878; 8 Oct. 1831, 1 Jan. 1833. ff. 1-3b;- (2) Letter from George Grote to his wife (wanting the beginning ); 23 Apr. 1846. ff. 4, 4b;- (3) Eyewitness account by Mrs Grote of events in Paris, 2-7 Dec. 1851, apparently written at that time. ff. 5-18b;- (4) Twelve letters from Harriet Martineau to George Grote and his wife ( those beginning on ff. 42 and 48 are incomplete ); 1858-1876. ff. 19-51b. An extract from ff. 40- 41 is printed in H. Grote, The personal Life of George Grote, 1873, p. 335. Also included in this group ( in chronological order ) are the following, viz.:- (a) Note by John Chapman, publisher of The Westminster Review, to George Grote; 2 Apr. 1858. f. 20;- (b) Extract from a letter of Harriet Martineau to Mrs Grote, apparently copied by the latter; Jan. 1867. f. 21:- (c) Letter from Harriet Emily Higginson to Mrs Grote, written on behalf of Harriet Martineau; 18 Aug. 1872. ff. 43- 44;- (5) Thirteen letters from John Stuart Mill to George Grote and his wife; 1861-1873. An extract from f. 65 is printed in H. Grote, op. cit., p. 283. ff. 52-73;- (6) Letter from Horace Say, the political economist, to Mrs Grote; 15 Mar. 1838. French. ff. 74 - 75b;- (7) Seven letters from Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby 1869, to Mrs Grote, mostly relating to foreign affairs; 1877-1878. The letter at f. 76 lacks the beginning. ff. 76 - 91. Paper; ff. 91. Quarto. French and English. 1831-1878. The papers are autograph unless otherwise stated; many of them bear annotations in the hand of Mrs Grote. Presented by Mrs Rachel Mary Howe.
