Non-musical correspondence and papers of Edward Speyer (d. 1934), amateur of music and art, viz.:- (1) Miscellaneous autograph letters from Arthur James Balfour (1st Earl of Balfour 1922), Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, 2nd Bart., M.P., George Joachim Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen, (chiefly relating to the production of the latter's book The Life and Times of Georg Joachim Goschen ... 1903 ), William Holman Hunt, Sir Frederick Pollock, 3rd Bart. (f. 3b), William Barclay Squire, William Butler Yeats, arranged alphabetically, together with the menu of a dinner given by Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Bart., on 17 Feb. 1904, endorsed with his signature and those of the guests ( f. 24 ). ff. 1-24b;- (2) Correspondence, mainly addressed to E. Speyer, arranged alphabetically, relating to his proposal, made in The Times of 9 Mar. 1914, for the building of an annex to the National Gallery to house the cartoons of Raphael, Mantegna, and Leonardo da Vinci from the Victoria and Albert Museum, Hampton Court Palace, and the Royal Academy of Arts, respectively. Among the writers are Charles Aitken, Director of the National Gallery, Laurence Binyon, Deputy-Keeper of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, Sir Herbert Frederick Cook, 3rd Bart., George Nathaniel Curzon, Earl Curzon, Charles John Holmes ( knt. 1921), Director of the National Portrait Gallery, and Sir Edgar Vincent, K.C.M.G. ( Viscount D'Abernon 1926 ). Included at ff. 48-52b are press cuttings, and records of a question asked in the House of Commons on the same subject. ff. 25-52b.
