Scope & Content:

Correspondence and papers of Francis Drake (b. 1764, d. 1821), diplomatist, together with (Vols. XIII, ff. 1-40b, XVI, ff. 178-237) papers of members of his family; 1696-1861. Drake was Secretary of Legation, 1790-1793, and Chargé d'Affaires, 1790-1792, at Copenhagen; Minister Plenipotentiary to Genoa, 1793-1797, and to Parma, 1794-1795; Envoy Extraordinary to Bavaria, 1800-1804; and Minister to the Diet of Regensburg, 1800-1804. The collection contains much correspondence with French royalists and amongst the special correspondence of Drake in Italy (Vols. II-XI) are several series of intelligence reports from these sources. Also included, chiefly in Vols. IV, ff. 160-313b, and VI, ff. 110-131b is correspondence relating to the occupations of Toulon, 1793, and Corsica, 1794-1796.
