QUEBEC SIEGE DIARY
Diary of the siege of Quebec by American forces under the command of Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery, entitled 'J. Danford's Book of Memorandums…' (see cancelled contemporary note on f. i) and written presumably by a member of the British garrison; 10 Nov. 1775- 6 May 1776. Similar narratives have been published and recorded by the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec in their Historical Documents, ser. 7 and 8, 1905-1906 (with bibliography in ser. 8, pp. 127-135). Paper; ff. v+37. Octavo. 1775-1776. On the back of the vellum cover is the name A. D. Bell in a 19th century hand. Inserted as f. ii is a draft inscription, 'Written by [Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer, 5th] Lord Aylmer [Governor- General of Canada 1830-1835] and given by him to J. C. F. Sep. 12th 1834', apparently for the memorial to Major-General James Wolfe at Quebec (see B. Willson, The Life and Letters of James Wolfe, 1909, p. 508). At ff. iii-v are notes made by the Essex County Record Office. Presented by Messrs. Bawtree and Sons, solicitors, of Witham, co. Essex, through F. G. Emmison, Esq., Essex County Archivist.
