GIOVANNI BOTTESINI, the double-bass virtuoso (b. 1821, d. 1889): 'Duetto per Violino e Contra Basso', in A minor, with accompaniment for full orchestra, including a serpent; mid 19th cent. Full score. The work was frequently performed by Bottesini before 1860 (see F. J. Fétis, Biographie Universelle des Musiciens, ii, 1883, p. 36) in Paris with the violinist, Vincent Sighicelli, and in London with Camillo Sivori, to whom it has been jointly attributed (see The Violin Times, i, 1894, p. 69). Published as the work of Bottesini, with accompaniment arranged for the piano, by Richault, Paris, [circ. 1880]; see also the edition (with piano accompaniment) by Gosudarstvennoe Muzikalnoe Izdatelstvo, Moscow, 1962. The present copy was evidently used for performance in England in the 19th century (see the list of orchestral parts on f. 1 and the cuts marked between ff. 16 and 22). Paper; ff. 31. Folio. Mid XIX cent. Presented (f. 1) by J. W. Horton to E. Howell [? the violoncellist, Edward Howell]. Presented by Henry Samuel Sterling, Esq., Hon. R.A.M.
