Letters from Horatio Walpole (1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton 1756), as Ambassador to France, and Thomas Robinson (1st Baron Grantham 1761), as Secretary of the Embassy, to Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend of Raynham, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, and George Tilson, Under-Secretary, with some copies of their replies; 2 Aug.-26 Sept. 1725, N.S. English and French. Other papers of the Townshend family of Raynham, co. Norf., are Add. MSS. 37634-37638, 38492-38508, 41139-41152, 41305-41308, 41654-41656, 45902, 48981, 48982, 50006-50012 and Egerton MSS. 892-894, 3124. The present volume is the second of a set of four containing despatches from Paris, Jan. 1725-Nov. 1726, mentioned in Hist. MSS. Comm., 11th Report, App. iv, 1887, p. 114, the others being Add. MSS. 38502-38504. Many of the despatches are partly in cypher, with decypherment, and they are chiefly concerned with negotiations relating to the Treaty of Hanover and the marriage of Louis XV to Maria Leczinska. Included among enclosures are some newsletters, dated Paris, 6 Aug.-10 Sept. 1725 (ff. 33, 59, 108, 138, 150, 166, 168, 204), and (ff. 49, 86) two original letters, signed, from Charles Jean Baptiste Fleuriau, Comte de Morville, French Secretary of State, 13, 16 Aug. 1725. Extracts from Townshend's letters to Walpole on ff . 114, 170, 238 are printed in L. G. Wickham Legg, British Diplomatic Instructions 1689-1789, IV, France 1721-1727 (Camden Society, vol. xxxviii), 1927, pp. 118-126. Paper; ff. vii+258. Folio. A.D. 1725.
