THOMAS HAWKER JOURNAL
Journal of Commander Thomas Hawker, R.N., on board H.M.S. 'Alexander'; 15 Oct. 1796-24 July 1802. The 'Alexander' served mostly in the Mediterranean under the command of Capt. Joseph Bullen, Capt. (afterwards Rear-Adm. Sir) Alexander John Ball, 1st Bart. 1801, and Capt. (afterwards Rear-Adm. Sir) Manley Dixon, K.C.B. 1819, and took part in the Battle of the Nile, 1-3 August 1798, and the blockade of Malta. The journal proper (ff. 1-21) gives a very brief account of the battle (f. 8b) but is followed by copies, circ. 1802, in the same hand of contemporary accounts, etc., the first two being translations derived from captured French sources, viz.:-(1) Journal of an unidentified French naval officer describing the battle; 1-3 Aug. 1798. ff. 22-28b;-(2) Letter of Jean-Baptiste Édouard Poussielgue, Administrateur-général des Finances de l'Égypte, to his wife describing the battle; 3 Aug. 1798. See Add. MS. 41763, ff. 22-23, for another translation of this letter. The French text, with translation, is printed in Copies of original letters from the Army of General Bonaparte in Egypt, intercepted by the Fleet under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson, i, 2nd edition, 1798, pp. 201-213. ff. 29-33;-(3) 'Verses on the Battle of the Nile', beg. 'Whilst haughty Gaul she seems to War' [sic for 'soar'], in 39 stanzas. ff. 33-37b;-(4) List of ships engaged, etc. Cf. the similar list in W. L. Clowes, The Royal Navy, iv, 1899, p. 357. ff. 37b-38. Paper; ff. i+38. Circ. A.D. 1802. Bound in a limp sail-cloth cover. Presented by Mrs Edith Hornbrook, great-niece of Commander Hawker.
