The specimens are taken from the following:- (1) The bilingual (Pahlavi and Greek) inscriptions on the relief of Ardashir I, founder of the Sassanian dynasty (A.D. 224-241) at Naksh-i- Rustam. For the texts see E. Herzfeld, Paikuli, Berlin, 1924, p. 85;-(2) The Cufic inscription of 'Adud al-Daulah, the Buwaihid Amir, at Persepolis, A.H.
443 = A.D. 955. Published by Herzfeld, op. cit., p. 125;-(3) Cuneiform signs. According to a letter (f. 48) from Cyril John Gadd, Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, 7 June 1950, some individual signs are identifiable as Old Persian, but the whole does not make any connected sense. Complete texts of (1) and (2) above were published, from Flower's papers, in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, xvii, 1693, pp. 775-777 and plate (cf. Sir E. A. W. Budge, The Rise and Progress of Assyriology, 1925, p. 19) but the wording of the explanatory notes is somewhat different from that of the present manuscript. This publication also includes a selection of cuneiform signs quite different from those given here. f. 46. Preserved with and formerly attached to Flower's manuscript is a copy (f. 47), in a different hand, of the Ardashir inscriptions, in both languages, but there is nothing to show by whom or at what time the two documents were so connected. ff. 46-48. Transferred from the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities. Paper and (artt. J, Q) vellum; ff. 48. Folio.
