ALBUM OF MARIANNE SPENCER STANHOPE, Containing copies in her hand of verses and a few letters, etc.; compiled circ. 1812-circ. 1823. The compiler was the daughter of Walter Spencer Stanhope, M.P., of Cannon Hall, W.R., co. York, and married in 1828 Robert Hudson, of Tadworth Court, co. Surrey. She was the author of Almack's, a novel, published anonymously in 1826. For details of her and her family see A. M. W. Stirling, The Letter-Bag of Lady Elizabeth Spencer-Stanhope, 1913. As well as pieces by the compiler's friends and members of her family, the album includes verses by or attributed to various literary and social celebrities of the day, including Byron, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, Charles James Fox, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Two short poems attributed to the last-named (ff. 8, 22) are not included in R. C. Rhodes, The Plays & Poems of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, 1928, and a number of other pieces by eminent persons appear to be unpublished. The Index to the present Catalogue contains the names of the more important writers, where it appears that some or all of the poems attributed to them have not been copied from printed editions of their works or other wellknown printed sources. There are pieces in French and Italian passim and a few (ff. 43b, 113, 113b) in Spanish. Paper; ff. i+117. Quarto. XIX cent. Binding of green morocco, tooled; the words 'M. A. S. Stanhope' stamped on the back cover. Book-plate at f . i, 'Marianne Hudson, Tadworth Court'. Presented by Wilfred Joseph Jeffery, Esq., formerly of the Department of Manuscripts.
