(1) Letters (14) to Sir James Edward Smith, M.D., F.R.S., the botanist; 1 June 1804-12 Jan. 1818. Copies, made from Linnaean Society Smith MS. 22, ff. 129-159b, by the donor of the present volume. See W. R. Dawson, The Smith Papers (Catalogue of the Manuscripts ... of the Linnaean Society ..., part I), 1934, pp. 51-52. ff. 1-31.
(2) Letters (13) to, with one rel. to, Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms; 20 Dec. 1825-17 Apr. 1828. ff. 32-60. Hardwicke's collections of drawings are now Add. MSS. 10974-11032, of which Add. MSS. 10974-10984, 10986-11004, 11007, and 11009 were transferred to the Department of Zoology in 1883, and are now at the Natural History Museum. On these, and on Hardwicke's career, see W. R. Dawson, 'On the History of Gray and Hardwicke's "Illustrations of Indian Zoology" and some Biographical Notes on General Hardwicke', Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History, ii, 1946, pp. 55-69. Other material relating to Hardwicke is now Add. MSS. 9868-9870, 9879-9882, 9895-9903, 9906, 9909-9912, 32440, f. 171, 32441, f. 188, and 33981, ff. 126, 188. Photocopies, etc., of Hardwicke's will, 14 Nov. 1831, with probate, 7 Apr. 1835, removed from the present volume, are now MS. Facs. Suppl. XI (19). One letter from Hardwicke to Smith (ff. 12-16) has been printed by P. Smith, Memoir and Correspondence of the late Sir James Edward Smith, ii, 1832, p. 118. Followed (ff. 61-66b) by five miscellaneous letters, 1801-1882, including two from Charles Robert Darwin, the naturalist (d. 19 Apr. 1882), to an unnamed botanist, 27 Mar., 3 Apr. 1882 (ff. 65-66b).
