ABRIDGEMENT OF THE CHRONICLE OF THOMAS SPROTT, monk of St Augustine's, Canterbury; 16th cent. The text, which covers the years 592-1221, appears to be transcribed from the now much mutilated Cotton MS. Vitellius D.xi, ff. 39-69 (also 16th cent.) or from a common exemplar, and represents an abridgement of that of Cotton MS. Tiberius A.ix, ff. 107-180, some of whose marginalia from Marianus Scotus it incorporates. Paper; ff. 24. Folio. xvi cent. Contemporary ink pagination 1-47. The name 'John Deedes' written, 16th cent., in the left margin of f. 1. Afterwards ff. 66-89 of a volume belonging to William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (sale-cat., 21 Nov. 1687, MSS. of Heraldry, lot 6). Later belonged to Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent (E. Bernard, Cat. MSS. Angliae, ii, p. 392, part of MS. 30; Hist. MSS. Comm., 2nd Report, App., p. 6, no. 16). Wrest Park sale, Sotheby's, 21 June 1922, lot 618. No. 115 in a more recent catalogue. Presented by N. R.
