WILLIAM HEREBERT COLLECTION

Collection of treatises, poems, sermons, etc., in Anglo-Norman French (items 12, 13, 19, 29, 30, 32 are Continental French), Latin and Middle English, compiled by Fr. William Herebert of Hereford (d. 1333?), who wrote or annotated considerable portions of the manuscript. Herebert entered the Franciscan Order at Hereford, and studied in Paris and Oxford, where he became forty-third Reader in Divinity to the Friars Minor (see A. Emden, A Biographical Register of the university of Oxford to A.D. 1500, ii, 1958, pp. 911-912; H. Gneuss, 'William Hereberts Übersetzungen', Anglia, lxxviii, 1960, pp. 169-171). Annotations by him are found in other manuscripts (Emden, loc. cit.; A. Little, 'The Lamport Fragment', English Historical Review, xlix, 1934, pp. 299-302; Gneuss, op. cit., pp. 171-172). The note at the end of the contemporary contents list (f.1b): 'ex collacione fratris Willelmi Herebert, auctoritate ministri generalis' is similar to that in Bodl. Lib. Rawlinson MS.C.308 which belonged to the Franciscan monastery at Hereford: 'de communitate fratrum minorum Hereford ex collatione fratris W. Herebert, auctoritate generalis ministri' (M. R. James, 'The Library of the Grey Friars of Hereford', Collectanea Franciscana I, Aberdeen, 1914, p. 117). Of the contents listed on f. lb the following are now missing: 'Hendyng. Item multa rithmice composita in anglico' which should follow f. 95 (two stubs remain), and 'Valerius ad Rufinum de uxore non ducenda' of Walter Map which should follow f. 153 (imperfect gathering).
