Eleven of the present letters relate to the period from 1865 to 1869 when Hodgson commanded the British forces in Ceylon and the Straits Settlements, acting as Governor of Ceylon from 1868 to 1869 during the absence of Sir Hercules Robinson, but the rest are of personal interest only. A letter of Hugh Fortescue, 2nd Earl Fortescue, 12 Dec. 1854, to Gen. Hodgson, is now Add. MS. 36995, f. 102. Letters to Philippart from Hodgson's younger brother Maj.-Gen. John Studholme Hodgson, 4 June-l5 July 1865, are in Add. MS. 47458, ff. 87-92b, and other letters of the younger Hodgson are in Add. MS. 47438. Paper; ff. 56. Quarto. 1865-1872. Presented by S. H.
