WILLIAM PERKS: 'Manifest of Colonel William Perks, Ex-Chief of the Staff of the Republican Forces of Central America'; 4 March 1828. A fair copy in which the signature on f. 39 is in a different hand from the rest of the MS. and may be that of Perks himself. Perks, a soldier of fortune who had served in the French army, played a considerable part in the wars between the states of Central America during the years 1826 to 1828. He was assassinated in 1828. The manifesto describes the operations in which he took part and attempts to vindicate his conduct against the charges of treachery which were made against him. The manifesto was printed in Spanish as Manifiesto del coronel Guillermo Perks, Guatemala, 1828. Paper; ff. i + 51. Quarto. A.D. 1828. Presented, with a copy of the printed 'Manifiesto' (transferred to Department of Printed Books, press-mark 8181. aa. 11) by John M. Wheeler, Esq.
