'A Copy of The Journals of Elizabeth Fry The Philantropist copied from the original manuscripts by her eldest daughter Katharine Fry. . .'; the transcription was commenced in 1845 shortly after the death of Elizabeth Fry (47456, ff. 3, 20), and completed circ. 1882 (47456, f. 359, 47457, f. 243b). Two volumes: Vol. I containing copies of Elizabeth Fry's reminiscences of childhood (ff. 5-7), her extracts from early journals, 1796-1798 (ff. 7b-20) and the journals from 1798-1824; Vol. II containing the journals from 1825-1845, including the period from Oct. 1833-Jan. 1837 for which the original journal is apparently no longer extant. An autograph letter of Elizabeth Fry to her husband and children, 3 Aug. 1841, is inserted at 47457, f. 3. Annotations in red ink by Katharine Fry passim. A prefatory note (47456, ff. 3-3b) by Katharine Fry describes the original journals in 1845; these are now mostly preserved in the Library of the Society of Friends (MS. Vols. S.255-S.273); two further volumes are in the Norfolk and Norwich Record Office (MSS. 21281, 21282, containing the journals for 9 Nov. 1816- 6 Aug. 1818 and 29 June 1821-7 Nov. 1822). The present copies show occasional omissions and alterations when compared with the originals. The extensive selections from the journals printed by Katharine Fry and Rachel Cresswell in Memoir of the Life of Elizabeth Fry, 2 vols., 1847, appear to depend on the present copies up to 1812 and thereafter on the originals.
