OVERBECK-NOVIKOV CORRESPONDENCE
- Scope & Content:
-
The letters of Joseph Julian Overbeck (b. 1821, d. 1905), D.Ph. (Halle), D.D. (Münster), Editor of the Orthodox Catholic Review, to Madame Olga Alexeevna Novikov née Kireev; Vol. I, 1869-1876; Vol.II, 1877-1900, n.d. The contents relate mainly to the project of setting up a Western Orthodox Church designed to be in communion with the Eastern Church and to include the 'Old Catholics' who seceded from Rome upon the proclamation (1870) of the dogma of the Papal Infallibility. Overbeck attended several of the 'Old Catholic' congresses and describes their leaders, Döllinger and others. For a glimpse of Madame Novikov's interest in the subject see W. T. Stead, The M.P. for Russia: Reminiscences and Correspondence of Madame Olga Novikoff, 1909, vol. i, pt. i, ch. 8. For her correspondence with W. E. Gladstone see Add. MS. 44268. Two volumes. Paper; ff. 314, 212. Folio and quarto. 1869-1900. Presented by Canon J. A. Douglas, D.D
