Contents:-(1) Two letters written by Crisp from Rome, one to the Rev. Christopher Shute of Broadwell, 15 Feb. 1739, containing the description of the Princes Charles Edward and Henry Benedict Stuart at a masked ball in Rome, partly printed in W. H. Hutton, Burford Papers, 1905, pp. 106-108; and one, apparently never sent, containing a description of recent excavations at Herculaneum, 24 Apr. 1740. ff. 1-8;-(2) Twenty-six letters from Crisp to Mrs Sophia Gast, his sister, 25 Jan. 1779-29 July 1782, containing frequent allusions to Fanny Burney, Dr Johnson and the Thrales; all (except two (ff. 37-38b, 51-53b) published in Hutton, op. cit., pp. 24- 84). Included is a letter from Alexander Allen, Crisp's agent, to Mrs Gast, 4 June 1783 (f. 58). ff. 9-58b;-(3) Notes on the antiquities of Rome made during his grand tour, 1738-1740. ff. 59-83b;-(4) Drafts of revisions of acts one and two of Virginia (1754), fragments only, not all adopted, of material for the edition of 1781, pp. 3, 4, 9, 10. ff. 84-92;-(5) Miscellaneous literary remains, including a slightly inaccurate copy in Crisp's hand of Lord Chesterfield's 'Verses written in a Lady's Sherlock upon Death', said to be addressed to Lady Fanny Shirley, and published in Robert Dodsley, A Collection of Poems, 1775, i, p.330 (another copy is in Stowe MS. 180, f.214); part of a translation [circ. 1740?] of Benvenuto Cellini's 'Vita'; and a plan of a biography of Philippe de Comines, n.d. ff. 93-98.
