'OUR SENSATION NOVEL', by Justin McCarthy, Irish politician, historian and novelist; after 1862. Autograph MS. as sent to the printer (published anonymously by Chatto and Windus in 1886). Preceded (ff. 1-4) by a dedication and proem in another hand, which appeared in the printed version over the name of Justin Huntly McCarthy, the author's son, who edited the book for the press. The novel, which purports to describe events in 1861, parodies contemporary sensational fiction and includes passages in the manner of Alexandre Dumas, the elder, and Charles Dickens. Two of the main characters, namely Count Foscoli and Pierre Valpierre, are based on Count Fosco in William Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White (1860), and Jean Valjean in Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862). Paper; ff. 247. 225 mm.xl18 mm. After 1862. Presented by Mrs Loullie Silvia Gimson.
