CANNINC-CLANRICARDE PAPERS. Family correspondence of Harriet, wife of Ulick John de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde, with other material; 1739-1874. Supplementary to the Harewood MSS. deposited with Leeds Central Library. The principal contents comprise:-
(1) Letters, etc., on classical subjects from Richard Tighe, of Trinity College, Dublin, to John Boyle, 5th Earl of Orrery (5th Earl of Cork 1753); 28 Aug.-21 Nov. 1739. ff. 1-18.
(2) Copy of a draft of a letter from George Canning, 27 Sept. 1799, to Lady Jane [Jean] Dundas, wife of Henry Dundas (lst Viscount Melville 1805), relating to Canning's intended marriage, not noted in D. Marshall, The Rise of George Canning, 1938, pp. 194-218. ff. 19-26.
(3) Letters to Lady Clanricarde from or relating to her brother, Charles John Canning, Earl Canning (d. 17 June 1862), and his wife Charlotte (d. 18 Nov. 1861), partly while on a voyage to the Levant, 12 Sept. 1840-11 Feb. 1841 (ff. 27-51b), but also later, mostly while Lord Canning was Governor- General of India, 10 Oct. 1854-23 Dec. 1861 (ff. 52-146b passim). Followed (ff. 153-238b) by letters to Lord and Lady Clanricarde from their son, Ulick Canning de Burgh, Lord Dunkellin, mostly written while he was serving in the Crimea; [14 Sept. 1854?]-3 July 1856. A single letter of Lord Canning to Lord Clanricarde is included at f. 63. Ff. 127-152 comprise correspondence and papers relating to the deaths of Lord and Lady Canning, 1861-1862. Letters of Lord and Lady Canning and Lord Dunkellin at ff. 7Ib-72, 94b, 98-99, and 225-232 are printed in part, with minor inaccuracies, by M. Maclagan, Clemency Canning, 1962, pp. 56-58, 106 and 234. ff. 27-238b.
(4) Letters, in French, some imperfect, evidently from a Frenchwoman, to a man living in Bolton Street, London, giving eyewitness accounts of events in Paris immediately following the overthrow of Louis Philippe; circ. 23 Feb.-[June?l 1848, n.d. Wrongly stated by Maclagan, op. cit., p. 355, to have been written by Lady Canning's sister Louisa, wife of Henry de la Poer Trench, 3rd Marquess of Waterford. ff. 239-289b. Paper; ff. 297.
