Title:

'FINNEGANS WAKE' by James Augustine Aloysius Joyce: drafts, mostly autograph, corrected typescript and proofs; 1923-1939. Included also are corrected printed texts of publications of instalments of the novel issued before the final version appeared in 1939. Notes by the donor and a few letters are interspersed. Other manuscripts in the Department by or about Joyce are Add. MSS. 45292, ff. 329, 330, 49975, 50850 C, 57345-57365. Arranged in general by episodes. These are identified in the description below by reference to book, chapter and page numbers in the printed work and the apparent succession of drafts within these divisions is also shown. Passages in notebooks (Add. MSS. 47471 A, B, 47482 A, B) were mostly written earlier than corresponding passages in other drafts. The drafts were printed in part in A First-Draft Version of 'Finnegans Wake' by D. Hayman, 1963, with a 'Draft Catalogue' at pp. 286-330. They have also been reproduced in James Joyce, Finnegans Wake ... a Facsimile of Drafts, Typescripts & Proofs, prefaced by D. Hayman, arranged by D. Rose and J. O'Hanlon, 20 vols. (The James Joyce Archive, ed. M. Groden), 1978, where some adjustments in the present arrangement of the text have been indicated. Nineteen volumes. Folio.
