FOX PAPERS. Correspondence and papers of the Hon. Charles James Fox (b. 1749, d. 1806), statesman, including his papers as Foreign Secretary in 1782 and 1783, together with correspondence of his kinsmen, John Fitzpatrick, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory, and General the Hon. Richard Fitzpatrick, his nephew, Henry Richard Vassall Fox, 3rd Baron Holland, and other members of the Fox family. On Fox's death his papers passed into the hands of Lord Holland, who added to the collection original letters of Fox recovered from recipients or their families and transcripts of other material in private hands. The papers also contain drafts, etc., of Lord Holland (d. 1840) and his physician, John Allen (d. 1843), for a proposed biography of Fox. Lord Holland's widow (d. 1845) bequeathed the collection, including in it papers from Holland House unconnected with Fox, to Lord John Russell (lst Earl Russell 1861), who published Allen's version of the biography, with additions of his own, as Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox (4 vols., 1853-1857) and also used the papers for his The Life and Times of Charles James Fox (3 vols., 1859-1866). The whole collection, including Lord John Russsell's own materials relating to Fox, was presented in 1907 by his children, the Hon. Francis Albert Rollo Russell and Lady Mary Agatha Russell, to Sir George Otto Trevelyan, 2nd Bart., author of The Early History of Charles James Fox (new ed. 1908) and George the Third and Charles Fox (2 vols., 1912, 1914), and father of the donor. The papers were used by the donor for his Lord Grey of the Reform Bill (1920). Other papers of Fox, including his papers as Foreign Secretary in 1806, remained among the family papers at Holland House and were subsequently acquired by the Department as Add. MSS. 51457-51519.
