NINE LETTERS FROM LOUIS HECTOR BERLIOZ to Carl (afterwards Sir Charles) Hal1é (ff. 1, 14), Théodore Ritter al. Bennet, pianist and minor composer (ff. 3, 7, 9), and his family, etc.; 1848-[1861-1862]. French. The letters relate to Berlioz's residence in London in 1848 and 1855 (ff. 1-4b), his relations with Wagner (ff. 4, 15b), his work on 'Les Troyens' (ff. 8, 12b), and the operas of Gluck (ff. 14-15). With the exception of the undated letter (f. 5), probably of the winter of 1855, addressed to 'Messieurs mes amis', they are published or noticed in J. Barzun, New Letters of Berlioz, New York, 1954. Six of the letters were bought in Paris in 1927 (cf. f. 17) by A. W. Ganz, author of Berlioz in London, 1950, in which several are published in translation. Paper; ff. 17. Quarto. 1848-[1861-1862].
