RAWLINSON PAPERS
Notebooks of Major-General Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, 1st Bart., G.C.B. (b. 1810, d. 1895), relating to the decipherment of the trilingual cuneiform inscription in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian on the rock at Behistun or Bisitoon, near Kermanshah, and to the grammar and vocabulary of Elamite and Assyrian inscriptions, together with other papers; circ. 1835-circ. 1888. He published memoirs in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society on the Old Persian inscription (vols. x, xi, 1846, 1849) and on the Babylonian inscription (vol. xiv, 1851). Rawlinson, who was Political Agent in Kandahar 1840-1842, was the first to copy the almost inaccessible rock-inscription of Darius at Behistun, contributed substantially to its decipherment and made the first satisfactory translation of it. He later became Director (1862-1895) and President (1878-1881) of the Royal Asiatic Society and a Trustee of the British Museum (1876-1895), in which capacities he was able to supervise the excavation and publication of cuneiform inscriptions.
