The Count was attached as Lieutenant to the Orenburg division commanded by Lt.-Gen. Nikolai Alexandrovich Verevkin (letter of Verevkin to the Grand Duke, 4 Mar. 1873, on f. 77) during the Khiva campaign of 1873, of which the earlier letters, especially that of 25 Apr. 1873, give a detailed first-hand account. The last two letters relate to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the first being a report from a subordinate officer to the Grand Duke of the Turkish attack on Mechka, Nov. 1877. ff. 75-108b;-(2) Five letters and reports to the Grand Duke, as Commander-in-Chief of the Life Guards, from Lt.-Gen.
