PITT FUNERAL DRAWINGS, together with notes. The drawings, in penand-ink, some of them (ff. 3b, 4, 8, 10b) coloured in wash, are of banners, escutcheons, etc., used at the funerals of:-(1) William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, 9 June 1778. ff. 3b-8;-(2) William Pitt, the younger, Prime Minister, 22 Feb. 1806. ff. 9-12. They are probably the work of Thomas Sharpe (d. 1825), heraldic painter, whose ledgers, together with those of his successor George Bishop, 1774-1839, are now in the Guildhall Library (MS.
546, 1 and 2). George Bishop later took Charles Bishop as partner and the firm under its late 19th century name of G. and C. Bishop and Clark is mentioned in a modern note on f. 2 as responsible for the drawings. Engravings of the two banners illustrated on ff. 3b, 4 appear in The Gentleman's Magazine, xlviii, 1778, facing p. 296. Paper; ff. i+12. Quarto. Circ. 1778-1806. Binding of crimson, straightgrained morocco, gold-tooled, by F. L. Sangorski and G. Sutcliffe. Presented by Louis Henry Hayter, Esq.
