St Augustine, Epistolae
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains a selection of 144 of the Epistolae (Letters) of St Augustine (b. 354, d. 430), though several letters are only included in a highly abbreviated form. The order and selection of letters in the table of capitula at the beginning of the manuscript does not always match the order in the main text.
It was copied by the same scribe as Add MS 15603, at the abbey of Notre-Dame de La Charité [see Turcan-Verkerk, Les manuscrits de La Charité, Cheminon et Montier-en-Argonne (2000), p. 64].
ff. 1r-2v: Table of capitula.
ff. 2v-253r: St Augustine, Epistolae, beginning with Letter 137 to Volusianus, beginning: ‘Domino illustri et merito prestantissimo filio Volusiano’.
f. 253r: An inscription (possibly of ownership) in red below the end of the text has been completely rubbed or washed out and is now illegible.
[f. 253v is blank].
Decoration:
A large decorated initial in red and blue with red and blue penwork flourishing and a winged zoomorphic figure (f. 2v).
The start of subsequent letters is signalled throughout by medium initials (between 5 and 3 lines) in red, except for the first medium initial on f. 2v which is in blue, with penwork decoration in red.

The Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame de La Charité, Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité, founded in 1133: possible ownership inscription on f. 253r, now illegible; copied by the same scribe, and containing the same kind of decorated initials, as Add MS 15603, a manuscript demonstrably from Notre-Dame de La Charité [see Turcan-Verkerk, Les manuscrits de la Charité, Cheminon et Montier-en-Argonne (2000), p. 64]; cited in the Abbey's catalogue of 1757 by Guillaume Pinard as no. 14, ‘Un gros volume in-folio, en vélin, qui renferme les cent quarante-quatre épitres ou lettres du grand saint Augustine, acheté a Besançon en 1375 du sieur Pierre de Vilette, noble citoyen’ [see Turcan-Verkerk, Les manuscrits de la Charité, Cheminon et Montier-en-Argonne (2000), p. 122].

John Cochran, (fl. c. 1820-1837), book-seller: bought from him by the British Museum in January 1837, note of purchase on f. [i]recto: ‘Purchased of Cochran, Jany 1837’.
