Letters of King Charles I to Prince Charles and to the Speaker of the House of Lords, 1646-1648; letters on Scottish politics, 1681-1688; epitaph on Mary Digby (d. 1692); 17th-century cipher keys
- Scope & Content:
-
A miscellaneous collection, including letters between King Charles I and Parliament preliminary to the negotiations at Newport in 1648. A note on the back of f. 15v noted the collection as 'Letters of King Charles I & others'. A not particulary legible note suggests that some of the papers were missing, and returned, in 1836 (shortly before the manuscript was bought by the British Museum.
Contents:
ff. 1r-2v: Letter of King Charles I to Charles, Prince of Wales, Newchurch, June 1646. In the King's own hand throughout; addressed 'For my Sone the Prince'. Seal, f. 2v.
ff. 3r-4v; Letter from King Charles I to the Speaker of the House of Lords, to be communicated to both Houses of Parliament, Carisbrooke, 10 Aug 1648. Written in his own hand and signed by him. Endorsed as brought down from the Lords and read, 15 Aug 1648, and noted the names of those who brought it down to the Commons.
ff. 5r-6v: Letter of King Charles I to the Speaker of the House of Lords (f. 5r) with enclosed the list of members of his household that was desired (f. 6r). In his own hand and with his signature.
ff. 7r-v: Cipher key.
ff. 8r-9v: Private instructions of King Charles II to his brother James, Duke of Albany and of York, his Commissioner in Scotland, Windsor Castle, 20 Jul 1681. Signed and initialled by the King.
ff. 10r-11v: Letter of James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth to King James II and VII, n.d. [1685-1688]. The letter does not name the King, but the Catholicism in the letter puts it squarely in the reign of James VII, both in terms of Perth's own conversion and the King's policies.
ff. 12r-13v: Epitaph on Mary Digby (d. 1692), widow of Kildare Digby, 2nd Baron Digby. A 19th-century note in pencil states that the epitaph is placed in Coleshill Church, Warwickshire, and that it was composed by John Hough, Bishop of Gloucester (VCH, Wawickshire, suggests the non-juror John Kettlewell: 'Parishes: Coleshill', in A History of the County of Warwick: Volume 4, Hemlingford Hundred, ed. L F Salzman (London, 1947), pp. 47-57. British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/warks/vol4/pp47-57 [accessed 10 May 2019]).
f. 14r: Cipher key, reign of James II.
