- Title:
- A versified chronicle from the priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs (imperfect), followed by a modern copy of the cartulary
- Scope & Content:
-
Part of this manuscript (ff. 4-9) was produced in Paris (the abbey of Saint-Martin-des-Champs) between 1072-1079, according to Prou, 'Dessins du XIe siècle' (1890). This chronicle is now imperfect because of a lacking folio after f. 4. A complete copy of this text with illuminations was made in Paris c. 1245, and is now Paris, BnF, nouv. acq. lat. 1359.
The 11th-century part is followed by a transcription of it (ff. 16r-20r) made by Baron Joursanvault (b. 1748, d. 1792), who owned this volume.
Contents:
ff. 1r-2v: A letter from Auguste de Bastard d'Estang to M. Techener dated to 14 January 1839.
ff. 4r-8r: A chronicle of the priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, in verse, beginning: 'Rex pius Henricus, Martini dulcis amicus, Templum Martino fecit sub nomine trino'; including a copy of the foundation charter by Henry I of France, dating to 1059-1060 (f. 4v), beginning: 'In nomine sancte et individue Trinitatis. Gloriose aecclesiae filii noverint unde gaudeant'; the charter ends abruptly at the end of f. 4v; the chronicle continues on f. 5r with: 'Amodo Martinus non exul, nec peregrinus' (ff. 5r-6r); Philippe I of France's charter for the dedication of the new church, the confirmation of privileges and the donation of the abbey of Saint-Samson and Saint-Symphorien of Orleans and half of its annual market (1067) (ff. 6r-7v), beginning: 'In nomine sancte et individue Trinitatis. Divinarum Scripturarum auctoritate instruimur antiquorum partum vestigia sequi et eorum'; ending: 'Actum Parisius publice, anno ab Incarnatione Domini MoLXoVIIo ind V, anno regis Philippi viio . Dedicata sub eodem tempore ipsa ecclesia a supradictis pene episcopis. Tale per exemplum redit ad juga debita templum', followed by the list of witnesses (ff. 7r-v); Philippe I of France's confirmation of the donation of Janville and Neuvy-en-Beauce to Saint-Martin-des-Champs (1065), interpolated in verses (ff. 7v-8r), beginning: 'Sic domum patris confirmat Rex, prece matris'.
ff. 10r-20v: A modern transcription of the 11th-century section (ff. 4r-8r), with an index (ff. 17r-20v), commissioned by Baron of Joursanvault.
Decoration:
A full-page miniature incorporating text (f. 4r) with, at the top, Henry I of France portrayed on his throne, surrounded by columns, designating the new church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs on the left; below, King Henry is giving the foundation charter inscribed 'Libertas aecclesia Sancti Martini' to the canons of the priory. A miniature of St Martin under a portico reading the charter (above); a miniature of Henry I on his deathbed (f. 5r). A half-page miniature of Philippe I of France on his throne, surrounded by his court, giving the charter to the canons; members of the court are named; the churches of Saint-Martin-des-Champs and Saint-Samson of Orleans on the right of the king (f. 5v).
