MADOX COLLECTIONS

Scope & Content:

Collections of Thomas Madox, Historiographer-Royal (b. 1666, d. 1727), for a proposed 'Feudal History and Custumier of England' (see his draft memorial describing the project, 4484, ff. 81-82b), consisting mostly of transcripts and extracts from public records and other archives, made for and annotated by Madox. Also included are some earlier transcripts and a few original letters, charters, etc., references to which will be found in the Index to this Catalogue. The 'Feudal History' was never written, but the collections were extensively used in the History and Antiquities of the Exchequer, 1711, and Madox's other publications. A catalogue, now Hargrave MS. 304 (4572, ff. 46-65, is a duplicate), made for his widow, Catherine, describes in some detail the contents of the volumes bound up by Madox himself, 4557-4571, and gives a general conspectus of the rest of the niateriai, then loose in bundles. A modern typewritten description of the collections is 4572*. Catherine Madox intended to sell the collections (see Hargrave MS. 304, f. 1b) but they were lodged in the Cotton Library, apparently through the agency of her brother, Vigerus Edwards (ibid. f.1), and were afterwards bequeathed by her to the British Museum and accepted by the Trustees in 1756. Paper. Ninety-five volumes. Folio and quarto.
