INQUISITION OF TOULOUSE
- Scope & Content:
-
'Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tholosanae', consisting of sixteen 'Sermones', most of which were delivered in Toulouse Cathedral, by Bernard Gui, Inquisitor (Bishop of Lodève, 1324), in collaboration with Geoffroy d'Ablis, Jean de Beaune, Gaillard de Preyssac, Bishop of Toulouse, Jacques Fournier, Bishop of Pamiers, Raimond d'Atho, Bishop of Mirepoix, and others; 1308-1323. Each 'sermon' sets out the oaths administered to the consuls, etc., the charges against the heretics (chiefly Albigensians or Waldensians), and the sentences against those pronounced guilty, certified by the official notaries of the Inquisition. The work is preceded by an alphabetical list of places referred to (f. 7); a table giving the dates and places where delivered (f. 7b); and a table of the names of the accused arranged under the places (f. 9b). The MS. was printed by Philip van Limborch as a supplement to his Historia Inquisitionis, Amsterdam, 1692. For a discussion by C. Molinier of the historical value of the 'Liber Sententiarum' (which was considered by him to be 'lost') see L'inquisition dans le midi de la France au xiiie et au xive siecle, Paris, 1880. Vellum; ff. 221. Folio. 1308-1323. Gatherings (excluding fly-leaf and bound-in leaves) I10, ii - xvii12, xviii11, with signatures. The MS. was in the possession of Benjamin Furly, an English Quaker merchant living in Rotterdam, by 1688 (see Original letters of John Locke .... ed. T. Forster, 2nd edn. 1847, p. 30 et seqq.); his bookplates, dated 1705, are inserted at ff. 7b and 221b. For a discussion of the way in which Furly obtained the MS. see Brit. Mus. Quart., xxxvi, 1972, pp. 83-92. At f. 8 is a Latin authentication of the MS. by a Catholic priest, Carolus Bontius, dated 4 Feb. 1695, with a Dutch translation and notes in English and Dutch by Benjamin Furly. After Furly's death in 1714 the MS. remained in his family and was sold by his grandson, Thomas Furly, in 1755 to Thomas Secker, Bishop of Oxford, who presented it to the British Museum, 21 Aug. 1756 (see Furly's letter, 1754, and receipt, 1755; ff. 3-5). A fragment of a Hebrew commentary on the Bible, in a German hand of the 12th cent., is bound in at f. 1.
