(8) 'the appointment of Harbingage' i.e. stabling for horses, and beds for the different degrees, from a Duke to a Squire. (10) Copies of ordinances,etc., relating to the functions of the College of Heralds, in a hand of the l6th-17th cent.:-(a) 'Here followeth a Determination of the Debate betweene the officiers of Armes and the kinge of Armes (& sergeants at armes)', written by Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence, at Caen, 3 Sept. 1417, identical with the 'Orders (made by the Duke) for the placing of the kings, Heralds and Sergeants-at-arms', of which other copies are to be found in Add.. (13) 'The Proclamacion of peace betwene England and Scotland ... 5th of August ... 26 of King H. the 8' (1535); followed by 'The order for proclamacion', or rather an account of the sheriffs and officers of Arms attending the above ceremony, with their fees. In a late 16th cent. hand. ff. 49, 49b.
(14) Short writings relating to knights and knighthood, in the same hand as art. 10. They are:- (a) 'Pre-eminences belonging in the law to knighthood', quoting 'Thurnings (i.e. Wm. Thurning) cheefe Justice [of the Common Pleas, 1396-1403]'. f. 50b;- (b)'The Droites [or Fees] that is to
be paied by them that be made Knights by the Kings Majestie in his chamber under the degree of a Barron'. ib.;- (c) 'The charges belonging to them that be made knights of the Bathe with the charge of the officers of the King's House'. (24) 'The testament and last will of the moost noble kinge of famouse memory Henry th'eight', dated 30 Dec. 1546 in a 16th cent. hand. From the fact of the clause contained in it which excludes the Scottish succession being eventually set aside it is described at the top, apparently in the autograph of Sir Robert Cotton, 1604, as 'Adulterina voluntas'. Also in
Cotton's autograph are the preamble of an inspeximus of the will by Edward VI (after the above heading) and (on f. 77b, after the names of the witnesses) a copy of an exemplification of the same made at the request of the executors by Sir Richard Southwell, and a note that the seal affixed to the letters patent was that of Henry VIII. For a list of other copies of the will, see Letters and papers . . . of the Reign of Henry VIII, xxi, part 2, pp. 320-323 (Calendars of State Papers). ff. 70-77.
(25) Descriptions of two royal ceremonies in the same hand as artt. 10, etc.: (a)'The cristening of the Ladie Marie at Greenwich (18 Febr.) 1515'. For an earlier copy, see Add. MS. 6113, f. 115. f. 78;- (b) 'Uppon Wednesdaie the 20 of Julie, 1554, was our most dread souueraigne Ladie queene Marie maried unto Philipp, Prince of Spaine'. (26) Formulae, temp. Henry VI, for royal signet warrants, for deeds of private patrons relating to ecclesiastical appointments, and for instruments under the seal of the Order of the Garter.
