'DE RE MILITARI' of Flavius Vegetius Renatus (fl. 4th cent.) translated into English in 1408 for Thomas, 5th Lord Berkeley (see f. 93), apparently by -- Clifton (see description of Lansdowne MS. 285, ff. 82-136, in the Catalogue of Lansdowne MSS.)
- Scope & Content:
-
The MS. commences 'Here begynneth a short tretis the whiche Vegicius that was the worshipfulle Erle Renate sonne wrote'; the prologue begins 'In olde tyme hit was the manner'; and the first chapter, 'Now by custummabille usage'. Other late 15th cent. copies are Royal MS. 18 A. xii and Sloane MS. 2027 (ff. 1-36, imperfect). At the beginning (ff. 2, 3) is an epitome of the contents of the work, and a very brief glossary in the hand of the donor, who has made marginal notes throughout the volume. At the end (f. 93) are two quotations in Latin, in a hand slightly later than the main body of the manuscript, from Godardus, monk of Malmesbury, and Valerius, followed by this comment: 'Hec bene mente nota; quia sunt velut aurea tota'. Also in this hand are the initials I.M. and the marginal note 'per W. Caxton imprimendum'. The translation is, however, quite different from that printed by Caxton in 1489, which was taken from Christine de Pisan's French version. Vellum; ff. 93. Small quarto. Late XV cent. Gatherings (excluding fly-leaf and bound-in leaves) i-x8, xi4, xii6, with signatures. Presented by Thomas Astle, 8 May 1761.
