Orationes, or declamations, in Latin and Greek by King Edward VI, 1548–1552
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 2r–222v: Autograph manuscript of King Edward VI's declamations.
The declamation 'Non sumus sponte mali' (ff. 66r–67v) is in a different hand and evidently by a different writer, as the king refutes his arguments in the declamation beginning at f. 112r. The dots in the margin of f. 66v, forming the letters 'H. Suffolkiae', are supposed to be the work of Edward's fellow pupil Henry Brandon, Duke of Suffolk (d. 1551), or to refer to him.
The declamations at ff. 14r and 16r also appear in Harley MS 5087 (ff. 19r, 20v).
The declamations on ff. 8r–10r, 14r–15v, 16r–17v, 30r–31v, 66r–67v, 90r–91v, 98r–99v, 102r–103v, 104r–105v, 112r–113v, 182r–183v are printed in J. G. Nichols (ed.) The Literary Remains of Edward VI (London: J. B. Nichols and Sons, 1857), pp. 99–143.
