'ROUSSEAU JUGE DE JEAN JAQUES'; 1776
- Scope & Content:
-
Autograph copy of part of an autobiographical work in dialogue form by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. According to a note by Brooke Boothby (7th Bart. 1789) on f. 1 'Ce manuscrit me fut mis entre les mains le 6 avril 1776 par M.J.J.R.'. Rousseau had written three autobiographical dialogues during the period 1772 to 1776. Being uncertain of the best means of ensuring their publication he entrusted a copy of the first 'Dialogue' to Boothby, whom he had met during a visit to England in 1766-1767. Boothby published this MS. at Lichfield in 1780 (Rousseau having died in 1778). A copy of the complete work was made by Rousseau in the summer of 1776 and this MS. (which is now MS. fr. 221-223 in the Public and University Library of Geneva) was published in vol. xi of the Collection complète des Oeuvres de J. J. Rousseau, Geneva, 1782. A third autograph copy had been given by Rousseau to his friend Condillac in February, 1776 (according to a note in the Oeuvres complètes, vol. i, Les confessions. Autres textes autobiographiques, Paris, 1959, p. 1902, this MS. is now in private hands) and a fourth autograph copy is now MS. 1493 of the Library of the National Assembly in the Palais Bourbon. Paper. ff. 59. Octavo. A.D. 1776. Presented by Brooke Boothby, 5 Jan. 1781.
