CUDWORTH MSS.
- Scope & Content:
-
Works by or attributed to Dr. Ralph Cudworth (d. 1688); late 17th-early 18th centt. Ten volumes. Quarto (4978) and folio. Paper. Partly autograph. The attribution of all these volumes to Cudworth was accepted by J. A. Passmore, Ralph Cudworth, 1951, pp. 107-113. However, in the case of 4983-4985 the evidence of Cudworth's authorship is unconvincing, although these volumes probably originated in his circle. In 1685 Cudworth's daughter Damaris married Sir Francis Masham, 3rd Bart., of Oates, co. Essex, and the MSS. remained with the Masham family until 1762, when they were purchased by Robert Davis, a bookseller of Piccadilly, under the impression that they were MSS. of John Locke. On discovering his mistake, he removed them to his house in Barnes, where they remained until about 1776, when they were purchased by the Museum (see Ralph Cudworth, A Treatise of Freewill, ed. J. Allen, 1838, pp. vi-viii, and a note by Sir Frederic Madden in Add. MS. 5015, f. 120).
