- Scope & Content:
-
Original letter of Margaret of Austria (b. 1480, d. 1530), Archduchess of Austria and Governor of the Low Countries, to the Council of Flanders, transmitting to them the translation of a treaty concluded at Calais between Charles V (r. 1519-1556), Holy Roman Emperor, and Francis I (r. 1515-1547), King of France, mediated by Thomas Wolsey (b. 1473, d. 1530), Archbishop of York.
Given at Brussels, 15 October 1521, and bearing Margaret's signature.
The dorse bears the address to the Council and a note recording its reading, written in a contemporary 16th-century hand.
The letter is housed together with a single paper leaf, the recto featuring a brief description of the letter in Modern French, possibly written to accompany the item as part of the sale of Jacques-Joseph Techener (b. 1802, d. 1835), bookseller, in Paris in 1835.
