- Title:
- Grant by Edward III to Isabella, his daughter, of a dowry for her marriage to Louis, count of Flanders
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant by Edward III to Isabella (b. 1332, d. 1382), his daughter, of a dowry for her marriage to Louis II (b. 1330, d. 1384), count of Flanders, Nevers and Rethel. Edward promises land and money, including 25000 livres parisis of Flanders per year; given at Bergues [then in the County of Flanders, now in France], 14 March 1347.
The marriage never went ahead. Louis had been pressured into the betrothal by the Flanders guilds, who wanted an English alliance, but he managed to escape his subjects while hawking and fled to the French court.
Affixed with an imperfect great seal of Edward III, oval, brown, with the king enthroned beneath a gothic canopy, an orb in his left hand, his throne flanked by lions, a heraldic shield in a niche on each side, with the legend, ‘edwardus dei gratia rex francie et anglie et dominus hibernie’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 25).
