Isabel of Portugal claims her rights to the crown of England and declares herself universal heiress of Henry VI, the late king
- Scope & Content:
-
Isabel of Portugal (b. 1397, d. 1471), daughter of João I (John I), King of Portugal (r. 1385-1433), granddaughter of John of Gaunt (b. 1340, d. 1399), and dowager Duchess of Burgundy, claims her rights to the crown of England and declares herself universal heiress of the late king, Henry VI (r. 1422-1461, 1470-1471).
Given at Aire-sur-la-Lys, France, 17 June 1471. The charter includes Isabel’s autograph signature.
Isabel’s claim to the English crown was made as a result of the Lancastrian connection with the Portuguese ruling dynasty of Aviz. Henry VI, the last Lancastrian king of England, had died on 21 May 1471 at the Tower of London, prisoner of Edward IV (r. 1461-1470, 1471-1483), the first Yorkist king. After claiming her rights to the English throne, Isabel ceded them to her son, Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy (b. 1433, d. 1477), on 3 November 1471. She died aged 74 on 17 December 1471.
Attested by the notarial marks of Hugo de le Val and Matheus de Hamello, clergymen of the city of Arras, France (‘presbiter canonicus Atrebatensibus’).
Endorsed: in a faded 15th-century hand; in a 16th century hand, ‘disp... do su... da Br.../ ... Isabella filla do Joao, Rey de / Portugallo’.
