Eleanor of Castile (b. c. 1240, d. 1290), Queen of England, grants power to William de Vergers, yeoman, to do fealty in her name to Guy [of Dampierre] (b. c. 1226, d. 1305), count of Flanders, for the land in Flanders that has fallen to her by hereditary right; given at York, 16 August of Edward I’s 8th regnal year [1280].
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘p[ro]curatorem regi[n]e angl[iae] p[ro] convictat cuida[m] valecto suo / p[otest]tate[m] faciendis homagium com[iti] flandr[is] de hiis qui ab eudem / tene[t] d[?]’; in an 18th-century hand, a Modern-French summary of the contents: ‘Homages / Procuration d’Eleonor / Reyne d’Angleterre …’.
Affixed with the queen’s very imperfect white seal. Obverse: a full-length figure of the queen holding a sceptre. In the field, the heraldic charges of the arms of Castile and Leon. Reverse: the coat of arms of England (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, pp. 99-100).
