Grant of protection of Queen Juana of Castile to the University of Alcalá de Henares

Queen Juana of Castile (b. 1479, d. 1555) grants protection to the University of Alcalá de Henares [Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid], at the request of Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (b. 1436, d. 1517), Archbishop of Toledo and founder of the University. The charter is signed by her father King Ferdinand II (b. 1452, d. 1516), and appended with Juana’s own seal; dated 5 March 1510.
Affixed with a paper note, inscribed in a 16th-century hand: ‘[cross] firmas de la prim[er]a r[eal] cedula del año de 1510 / Licentiatus Capara / Fernandus sello, Reg[istrada] / el Bachiller francés / Castañeda Chanciller’. Their signatures feature on the endorsement.
Inscribed on the plica: ‘recibe v[uestra] al[teza] en su protec[c]io[n] al collegio de Alcala de Henares’.
Endorsed: in a 16th-century hand, four signatures, including those of ‘Bachiller francés’ on the left and the chancellor Castañeda on the right; in a 16th-century hand, ‘como reçibe el Rey en su protection el collegio y universidad’; in an 18th-century hand, ‘con las protectiones’; in another 18th-century hand, ‘protección de la Reyna doña Joana [?]’; in an 18th-century hand: ‘sacado tº 2º 3456’; previous reference: ‘[?] cap. 2 nu. 6’.
Affixed with Juana’s fine red seal, with an original green silk ribbon. The seal bearing a coat of arms: quarterly, I, 4. quarterly; i., iv. quarterly, a. d. Castile, b. c. Leon; ii., iii. per pale dex. Aragon, sin. Sicily; 2. 3, quarterly, I. Austria (Hauswappen), ii. Burgundy (Modern Dukes); iii. Burgundy (Ancient Dukes), iv. Brabant, over each of the 2nd and 3rd quarters a small escutcheon, per pale, dex. Flanders, sin. Tirol. Ensigned with a jewelled crown of three fleurs-de-lis alternated with two leaves in sight. Between the rustic ornamental initial letters ‘F. Y.’ (Filippo : Yuana).
The legend displayed in two concentric circles. The outer circle: ‘..…ET + IOHANA + DEI + GRA[TIA] + REX + ET + REGINA + CASTELLE + LEGIONIS &c….. NATI + PRINCIPIS + ARAGON + ET + VTRIVSQ[UE] + SCILIE + ARCHIDVCES.’ The inner circle: ‘AVSTRIE + DVCES + BVRGV[N]DIE + BRABA[N]CIE + COMITES + FLANDRIE + TIROLIS + ETC +’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), VI, p. 630).
